Lady Debby and I recently spent some time in Oklahoma City visiting my sister and brother-in-law. One of the places they took us was the Oklahoma City Land Run Monument. This monument is located towards the end of the Bricktown Canal. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Without going into too much detail, the first Oklahoma Land Run took place in 1889. At the sound of a cannon shot, 50,000 people (on foot, on horse, in wagons) rushed into unassigned lands of Oklahoma Territory to stake their claim for free land by planting a flag. It was chaos. Many never made it. Some settlers snuck over the border a day or two early (they were later called, Sooners).

The monument is comprised of dozens of bronze statues, all of which are one-and-a-half life size. Although I took these photographs in color, I converted them to B&W to give the appearance of old-time photographs.
